THE CHA-PEABODY CONVERSATION” SERIES TO FEATURE PRODUCER LAURIE KAHN-LEAVITT

Written by Eric Holder, University of Georgia, Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, Public Relations department head, the Peabody Awards

A 2004 Peabody Award winner will be on the University of Georgia campus Friday to attend a screening of her winning documentary, “Tupperware,” and to discuss her film with those in attendance.

Laurie Kahn-Leavitt, producer, writer and director, will be on stage with Peabody director Horace Newcomb on Friday, September 30, at 7 p.m. in UGA’s Tate Center Theater. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

Compiled from rare footage of Tupperware Jubilees and interviews with executives and dealers, “Tupperware” takes a new look at American values and attitudes in the 1950s.

Newcomb said, “ ‘Tupperware’ certainly provides a nostalgic glimpse of post-war American culture in the 1950s. But it is far more than that. This film explores how the public roles and financial stability afforded women by Tupperware sales actually changed lives.”

Narrated by the critically-acclaimed Kathy Bates, “Tupperware” follows the careers of reluctant inventor Earl Tupper and his creative marketing genius Brownie Wise. Wise transformed the stereotype of the drab door-to-door salesman into the image of successful female executives.

Following an introduction by Center for Humanities and Arts director Betty Jean Craige, “Tupperware” will be screened in its entirety. The audience is invited to participate in the conversation between Kahn-Leavitt and Newcomb after the film. For more information about “Tupperware,” visitwww.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/tupperware.

The Peabody Awards program collaborates with the Center for Humanities and Arts each year to bring a Peabody recipient to the University of Georgia for a screening and discussion of a prize-winning work. For more information about CHA, visit www.cha.uga.edu
