Flagpole Magazine: Urban Henry plays at Tasty World with Flair and Capital Capital
URBAN HENRY Eric Holder – vocals, guitar Matt McFerron * guitar Brandon McDearis – drums John Britt – bass formed in l992 by Eric Holder and Matt McFenon, Urban Henry drew on such influences 3; the Pixies, Hiisker Dii, Sonic Youth and Girls Against Boys, Drummer Brandon McDearis came aboard soon after the band formed. The group recently recruited the lovable John Britt (Stuntdouble, Hai Karate) to handle the bass chores.
Urban Henry’s Eric Holder is an excitable young man and with good reason. His band is currently at work on its third recorded effort, a full-length album due out by the end of the summer. The yet-to-be-named album, recorded with Chris Grehan (The Possibilities, Weather Radio) at Full Moon Studios, will likely be the strongest effort to date according to Holder. The release will showcase both the band’s skill as a studio outfit and its prowess as a live act, with a few cuts bdnjj recorded at shows. Urban Henry has generated quite a buzz recently with its updated indie rock punch.
The albums Urban Henry and Already Dead, both released in 1999 – generated plenty of radio airplay and the band’s punk-influenced sound and Holder’s impassioned vocals insure that the high-octane shows are blistering affairs sonicalty.
Holder speaks: What were you and Matt going for when you first formed the band? “Just play music, nothing really different than the other guys in town. We were looking to be a little more rockin’ and with more emotions, and just whip it out.
It’s not all about death, doom and destruction. It’s about a “get a grip” type stuff and a “reality check” type stuff. We like going to shows and being part of the blitzkrieg, and we wanted to be a part of that.” How so? “We are a live band. The shows are loud and super fun. They’re spontaneous; no two shows are alike. Some of them suck, sure, but some of them are pretty rockin’. People keep coming back… as long as we put them on the guest list Paughsj.
We’re all pretty intense guys, so by tire time we get to a show, we’re all about to whack out,” Is there a lot of competition between local bands from where you’re standing? “I don’t see any competition for Urban Henry. We are the live band in Athens. I don’t wanna come across as arrogant, but I believe in it. If you don’t believe in it. you’re just posing. We got something different.”
